University of Alabama and affiliated medical center raise minimum wage

The University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB Medicine will raise their minimum wage to $11 this spring, increasing wages for more than 1,000 workers.

The increase, which is the system’s first uptick in minimum wage since 2007, will take effect March 20. Hourly employees currently earn $8.24 per hour.

UAB is Alabama’s largest employer, with roughly 23,000 workers, officials say.

“UAB is proud to lead in the area of elevating its people at all levels of the institution,” UAB President Ray Watts said in a statement. “This change is consistent with our strategic imperative of creating an environment where all staff and faculty can succeed.”
