UC launches first phase of new $15 minimum-wage policy

The first phase of a minimum wage hike went into effect Oct. 1 at University of California campuses for staff and contract employees who work more than 20 hours a week, according to USA Today.

The minimum wage for 3,200 workers in the UC system rose to $13 an hour and will increase an additional dollar to $14 in 2016 and to $15 in 2017.

The UC system is the first public university to voluntarily set a minimum wage at $15, according to a statement from University of California President Janet Napolitano.

Denver Public Schools also recently announced that it would implement a minimum wage of $12 an hour. The decision impacts about 1,700 employees, including 500 foodservice staff, many of whom will receive a 33 percent pay increase, as reported by FoodService Director.
