School invites senior citizens to dine with students

The Haines School in Haines, Ala., is inviting seniors to eat lunch with students in the cafeteria, KHNS reports.

At the start of next year, seniors will be invited to dine with students every Friday as a pilot. Haines’s volunteer committee would sponsor the meals.

The local senior center says the program would provide a Friday lunch option to seniors since the center only provides lunch Monday through Thursday, while school officials believe that the lunches will give students the opportunity to connect with an older generation.

Critics, however, say that the program will take away business from restaurants.

The school board is using the pilot to assess whether or not the Friday lunches will be introduced permanently.
