School district launches student supper program

Weslaco Independent School District in Weslaco, Texas, is now offering dinner for students after school, valleymorningstar.com reports.

Dora Pena, foodservice director for Weslaco ISD, says the goal of the supper program is to achieve a healthier student body by incorporating nutritional meals with after-school activities.

The program, which is being debuted at 10 elementary schools, was able to launch due to an ACE (Texas Afterschool Centers on Education) grant and funding through the USDA Food and Nutrition Service’s At-Risk Child and Adult Care Food Program. The district will be reimbursed on a monthly basis for up to $3.16 per meal.

The meals are set up the same way as school lunches, Pena says. They are served each weekday from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. and include fruits and vegetables, healthy proteins and whole grains.
