The proposed ban on new corporate cafeterias in San Francisco could be facing changes as it goes before the Planning Commission this week, The San Francisco Examiner reports.
Introduced this summer, the ban would prohibit new corporate cafeterias. Current cafeterias would remain unaffected. Officials say its aim is to help struggling local restaurants attract more patrons.
While the city’s Planning Department says it agrees with what the ban is trying to solve, it believes the ban would harm corporate cafeteria jobs. The department has instead provided a list of alternatives to the ban, such as requiring corporate cafeterias to be located on the first floor of buildings and be open to the public, as well as requiring companies to give employees vouchers for local restaurants.
After the proposal is reviewed by the Planning Commission, it will move to the Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Transportation Committee before being reviewed by the full board.
