The 2018 farm bill making its way through Congress could cease the automatic enrollment of more than 23,000 Wisconsin students for free or reduced-price meals at school, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
If passed, the current form of the bill states that students whose families have a household income of more than 130% of the federal poverty level would no longer be automatically eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Families could still enroll their children in the program if they fill out the paperwork themselves.
At the request of Wisconsin Democrats, the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau released a memo that shows that around 23,369 students in the state who receive free or reduced-price meals would be affected.
