K-12 nutrition specialists tour Auburn University facilities

Fifty employees of Auburn City Schools’ Child Nutrition Program recently toured Auburn University to see how professionals in the college-and-university segment handle such issues as food-safety training and wellness.

Employees exchanged ideas and were given tips on how to feed students meals that are “nutrition-conscious,” reported the website OANOW.com.

The tour included visits to the Auburn Recreation and Wellness center, Tiger Dining and the university’s Wellness Kitchen, which primarily serves student athletes.

Ashley Powell, director of ACS’ child nutrition program, told OANOW.com that her group was very interested in the Wellness Kitchen.

“We follow the food safety guidelines and regulations, so we’re always trying to think of better ways and products we could serve, how to do it, what’s in trend, what students will eat — those kinds of things,” Powell said.
