Jose Andres has opened his first restaurant in a hospital. The award-winning chef opened Beefsteak, a concept that offers plant-forward dishes prepared fresh in front of customers, in the Crile Food Emporium at Cleveland Clinic.
Andres was recently named Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation for his work in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. His World Central Kitchen served more than 3.5 million meals to the people there.
The Crile Food Emporium at Cleveland Clinic is designed like a food hall, with eateries in the center and seating near the windows.
Beefsteak is the newest among five restaurants there, all of which offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food options every day. Other restaurants in Crile Food Emporium include Char, with savory and sweet breakfast options, plus fresh grilled burgers, sandwiches and salads; Carve, with house-roasted meats carved to order and served with seasonal sides, grain salads and a hummus bar; Italia, which serves up Italian-style fare that includes fresh entrees, such as baked eggplant parmesan and specialty flatbread topped with local and seasonal produce and cheeses; and Simmer & Steam, a noodle bar with housemade Vietnamese-style pho broths with a choice of protein and seasonal ingredients including greens and fresh herbs.
Crile Food Emporium is run by contract-management company Bon Appetit Management Co.
