An on-campus greenhouse and garden are not only teaching students at one Georgia high school about science and nutrition; they also provide herbs and vegetables for students’ lunches, reports fox5atlanta.com.
Officials say Atlanta Public School’s Benjamin E. Mays High is the only school in the district with a greenhouse that uses hydroponics and aquaponics to grow vegetables and herbs year-round.
“We can grow 20 to 25 plants in about 30 days compared to a traditional farming method that may only generate two crops a year, so that’s allowing us to provide food to 86 school cafeterias,” a student member of the Urban Agriculture Club, which oversees the garden and greenhouse with the help of a science teacher, told the website.
