Facebook’s new office will source half of its meals from local restaurants

Facebook’s new office in Mountain View, Calif., will have a cafeteria and free meals for employees, but it will need to source half of its meals from local restaurants and shops as part of a deal with the city, Mountain View Voice reports.

The Mountain View City Council approved the plan last week that will require the tech giant to deliver meals from nearby restaurants to its new office space, which will open at the end of this month.

Once it opens a second office next door within the year, Facebook will also give debit cards and vouchers to be used at local businesses to the 1,700 employees housed in the space. The company will also provide data reports on their meal services to the city.

The approved plan breaks from the City Council’s 2014 rule that banned companies from offering free daily meals or subsidizing more than half of the price of food at cafeterias for employees.
