Eat Smart, Get Moving Winners Announced

June 19-Winners for the Eat Smart, Get Moving Contest sponsored by the School Nutrition Foundation and the National Dairy Council have been named.

The first prize-winning teams are: Blount County High School in Maryville, Tenn.; Nelson Elementary School in Dover, Fla.; and the Nutrition Office of Harrison District #2 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Second prize went to: Hedges Intermediate School in Mansfield, Ohio; Oakland Elementary School in Oakland, Ky; and Wasatch Elementary School in Ogden, Utah. The overall winning district was the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan District 196 in Eagan, Minn.

The contest is designed to get members of the School Nutrition Association (SNA) to serve as role models for students, by encouraging students to eat more low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and to get 60 minutes of physical activity each day. In order to become good role models for their students, participating SNA members tracked the amount of servings they ate from these foods groups and the amount of their daily physical activity.

About 105 teams with a total of 820 members participated in the contest.

First prize-winning teams will receive prizes including milk merchandisers for their schools, gift certificates to use in SNA's Emporium and spa gift certificates. Second prize-winning teams will receive Emporium gift certificates and spa gift certificates. The overall winning district will receive a $5,000 one-time wellness grant.
