Some parents of students at Ohio-based Canton City School District are seeking a policy that would extend lunch periods.
Josh Parr and his wife allege that their daughter, Giavana—a kindergartner—does not have enough time to eat during her 20-minute lunch period because of the time she spends waiting on line and the need to clean up afterward, Cantonrep.com reports.
Parr said he’s concerned that the limited time ultimately affects students’ learning ability and possibly their health, as they “may choke trying to rush.” Ultimately, he’d like to see the district extend lunch times district wide.
Although Ohio schools do not have to follow a specific state or national policy regarding how much time students should be given to eat lunch, the state’s education department recommends 30 minutes, according to the website.
