On May 6, schools across the country will celebrate and recognize school nutrition professionals as part of National School Lunch Hero Day. Here’s a look at how some districts are celebrating.

1. Saying thanks

Dallas ISD is encouraging students to say thank you to school nutrition staff by creating artwork, writing them a note or giving them a shoutout on social media. The district is also hosting a contest where students and parents can vote for their favorite school lunch team. The cafeteria with the most votes will be awarded a prize.

2. #whomakesyourfood

Prince William County Public Schools in Manassas, Va., turned the event into a multi-day celebration. For the past several days, the district has been highlighting different members of its nutrition team on social media with the hashtag #whomakesyourfood.

3. Hats off to our heroes

In honor of National School Lunch Hero Day and Chartwells K12’s 25th anniversary, the foodservice management company is hosting a #HatsOffToOurHeroes tribute. As part of the event, each Chartwells K12 associate is receiving a special 25th anniversary hat. Chartwells K12 is also donating 2,500 copies of the book, “Lunch Lady 2-For-1 Special: The First Helping” to its elementary school partners. Chartwells K12 CEO Belinda Oakley also visited second grade students at Orchard Park Academy in Westminster, Colo., to read the book to them.
