Laguna Middle School in San Luis Obispo, Calif., held a local food sampling during students’ lunch period, KSBY reports.

Students got to try local hummus served with locally grown carrots, celery and strawberries. The special event was held in celebration of California’s expansion of universal free meals for students.

Last year, California became one of the first states to incorporate funding to cover school meals for all students into its state budget.

Other states are also introducing legislation that would provide universal free meals for students. Lawmakers in Colorado recently introduced a bill that would fund free school meals for all students in the state by taxing residents who make over $300,000 annually. Massachusetts and Vermont are also looking at using state funding to extend universal free meals for students for the upcoming school year.
