5 silver linings from this week: July 10 edition

Operators and individuals across the country recently stepped up to fight food insecurity in their communities. Here are five bright spots we found this week.

1. Baking bread

A student at Oxford Hills School District in South Paris, Maine, has raised over $600 for the district’s food pantry by selling homemade bread that he baked with his grandmother.

2. Teaming up

Corinth Central School District in Corinth, N.Y., partnered with Dairy Farmers of America and other organizations to host a milk and food drive-through at its elementary school. Each family that stopped by received two gallons of milk and two food boxes, each of which contained 20 pounds of food.

3. Hospital employees give back

Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Conn., has donated thousands of pounds of food to two local food pantries. The food was donated by hospital employees through a food drive set up at the hospital.

4. Connecting farmers to families

The Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation founded by Ayesha and Steph Curry has launched a new program that purchases produce from small and minority farmers and donates it to families in Oakland Unified School District in Oakland, Calif. The program has already donated around 100,000 pounds of food to families and is looking to expand to other districts.

5. Drive-through food

Shenango High School in New Castle, Pa., also hosted a free food drive-through this week. Volunteers handed out 7,400 boxes of food to families, which contained dry goods, dairy products, frozen meals and fresh produce.
