2. Take it on the road
To increase participation, Capital School District in Dover, Del., launched a food truck specifically for summer feeding. (Originally, students could receive summer meals from the district at a weekly farmers market only.) Staff hope the food truck will allow them to expand outreach as well as serve meals that require more preparation and heat.
The truck, which is named Chef Senator’s and sports the slogan “Fresh Food With a Groove,” took about a year to retrofit and cost an estimated $147,000. Students were invited to craft its artwork, slogan and name through a competition. Staff took the truck for a test run on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to promote the summer lunch program.
