11 noncommercial operations named best places to work
By FSD Staff on Dec. 11, 2018Of the companies named on Glassdoor’s list of the 100 best places to work in 2019, 11 slots belonged to noncommercial operators. Ten hospitals and one contract feeder landed on the yearly ranking, which is based on employees’ evaluations of their jobs, work environment and employer practices for the preceding year.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., ranked highest on the list among noncommercial operators, coming in at No. 13. Comments on the Glassdoor site depict St. Jude as a satisfying place to work because of its noble mission. Many of the respondents said they were proud to work for a company that represented such a good cause: “Our mission is number 1! I am so proud and honored to work for such an amazing organization,” read one comment. Good benefits, work-life balance and generous PTO were named as other reasons employees like working at St. Jude.

Trilogy Health Services
Trilogy Health Services in Louisville, Ky., came in at No. 35 on the list. Trilogy is a provider of senior living and long-term healthcare services, including independent and assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitative services. Employee comments on the site noted good benefits, flexible hours and friendly co-workers. A few comments even remarked on the “great food.”
Northside Hospital
Northside Hospital, a three-hospital system serving Atlanta and the surrounding areas, came in at No. 52. The system employs more than 1,800 physicians and 5,000 other workers. On the Glassdoor site, 92% of employees said they would refer the hospital to a friend for employment, and 97% said they approve of the CEO. They count good work-life balance and strong opportunities for advancement among reasons they are happy on the job. “Leave your negativity at the door; there’s no room for that at Northside,” noted one commenter.
New York-Presbyterian Hospital
New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City ranked No. 64 on Glassdoor’s list. Employees at the hospital say they appreciate the culture and generous benefits. Many also cited continuing-education opportunities, whether it’s additional schooling or credits. “Came here from another large hospital chain and the difference is noticeable. People actually want to work here, and it shows. Great learning and growing environment. Friendly and helpful staff. Amazing pay and benefits too,” said one employee in the comments section.
Memorial Sloan Kettering
Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City took the 66th spot, with commenters noting its commitment to generous benefits and career development, including tuition reimbursement. Many also called it a great work environment for people just starting their careers. “It is a great place to work especially if you’re motivated to move forward in your career,” noted one commenter.
MD Anderson Cancer Center
MD Anderson Cancer Center made the list at No. 68. Eighty-four percent of commenters from the Houston-based healthcare outfit would recommend the job to a friend, and 94% approve of the CEO. One commenter summed up that general sentiment: “The president of the organization leads by example. He is a true representation of servant leadership. The people that work at MDA are truly committed to the cause of eliminating cancer.” Others noted good morale, job security and the center’s mission as the reasons they like working there.
Phoenix Children’s Hospital
Phoenix Children’s Hospital came in at No. 83. One former employee said: “Best culture in the valley. … These folks care and it shows. Great co-workers, great mission. Compensation was excellent. I only left because I received an offer I couldn't turn down.” Others noted the hospital’s mission is paramount to its positive rating: “Working in a children's hospital can be hard sometimes, you see families who are hurting and children who are in pain,” one said. “Working here however you see a team of people who are dedicated to helping these families and it is very special.”
Massachusetts General Hospital
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston made the list at No. 84. Many commenters said they loved the teams they worked with and cited comradery as a major reason they’re positive about their jobs. Others mentioned benefits and schedule flexibility, with one noting “great benefits especially if you have a family.”
Texas Health Resources
At No. 89 is Texas Health Resources, a hospital system with 14 locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. While most respondents had positive feelings around pay, benefits and career growth, one commenter had some advice for management: “Remember to connect with your staff and let them know you value their skill(s) and recognize how they are contributing to the team. Remember sometimes it is great team building to get in the trenches too.”
Flik Hospitality Group
Coming in at No. 97 is Flik Hospitality Group. Most interviewees at Flik applied online (36%), while 32% came from employee referral. Most commenters said the opportunity for advancement was one of the most positive attributes of working at Flik. “It is a part of a much larger company so there could be good opportunities for movement if you build strong relationships. They have some interesting training programs,” noted one comment.
Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser Permanente rounds out the list at No. 98. Many comments on the site noted the healthcare system’s commitment to overall health, not only in the communities it serves, but for its employees as well. Though most comments were very positive, some offered ways to improve the operation for its workforce: “I believe there should be a team within KP which helps the organization as a whole adapt to new opportunities and challenges. KP is so monolith at this point it is very slow to adapt and do anything new or different.”
