Seniors, too, love to see what’s happening in the kitchen. Twice a year since 2012, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community has offered what it calls Kitchen Confidential back-of-house tours to groups of up to 25 people at a time. The facility usually has to add more tours to accommodate the demand.

Participants come away impressed, especially at the quality for scale, Executive Chef Jeremiah Moyer says. “They don’t realize how a large kitchen works, that we’re doing a lot of freezing and prep and processing at the same time,” he says. “They’re surprised at how much work gets done.”
