Changing regulations
New legislation had foodservice operators wringing their hands this year, as the U.S. Department of Labor announced new rules that would require salaried employees making under $47,476 to receive overtime—almost double the current salary threshold. Enforcement of those rules, which were set to take effect on Dec. 1, has since been delayed.
Complicating concerns, more cities made moves toward so-called secure scheduling—enacting or considering legislation that would require employers to give staff members set work schedules around two weeks ahead of time.
And K-12 operators watched Child Nutrition Reauthorization take a backseat in the Senate to issues like the Zika virus and policies on GMOs.
