In an effort to cut costs and improve efficiency, Bethel School District is changing the way it delivers meals to students by opening a centralized meal-preparation site, The News Tribune reports.
Previously, BSD prepared meals at eight schools and shipped them to more than 27 sites, which feed 14,000 students per day.
Officials say the 23,000-square-foot state-of-the-art central kitchen—which will be fully operational by the end of the month—will help cut shipping costs as well. They estimate it will reduce the cost of foodservice operations by $800,000 a year, according to The Tribune.
“The equipment here enables us to scratch-prepare whole foods on a massive scale,” Leeda Beha, director of child nutrition for the school district, told The Tribune.
