Walt Disney World cafeteria workers seek unionization

More than half of the cafeteria workers at Walt Disney World are trying to unionize, signing cards stating they want Unite Here to represent them, reports In These Times.

Though most of the Orlando, Fla., park's nearly 75,000 workers are unionized, its 350-person foodservice staff works for Sodexo, Disney’s cafeteria vendor.

The cafeteria staff are looking for higher wages and accuse Sodexo of erratic scheduling, relocating workers on short notice and retaliating against them if they complain about their situation.

"I talk to people who deal with last-minute schedule changes, switched shifts. I know workers who are living in their cars," Sammy Torres, a chef at Sodexo, told the website. "We’re trying to get better benefits and show we’re not paid enough."

Sodexo respresentatives did not respond to requests for comment about the matter.
