Vt. college stops sale of energy drinks on campus

Middlebury College will no longer sell energy drinks, including 5-hour Energy and Red Bull, in any of their campus dining or retail facilities.

The decision was not an administrative one, but rather a suggestion from the Community Council—a campus organization comprised of students, faculty and staff who make recommendations on various aspects of life on the Vermont-based campus, reports nbcnews.com.

Officials told NBC that consumption of the energy drinks have been linked to “unsafe behavior like alcohol abuse and high-risk sexual activity,” and serious health consequences.

“Middlebury College respects the work its students, faculty and staff have done in researching the health effects of energy drinks and in making the recommendation that the College no longer sell such drinks in our campus retail outlets,” the school’s news director, Stephen Diehl, told FSD via email. “We hope that this move will contribute to a healthier campus environment.”
