Va. college partners with student-run CSA

Access to fresh produce just got easier for students at the University of Virginia.

The Charlottesville, Va., university’s dining service has partnered with Greens to Grounds, a student-run nonprofit organization that delivers locally grown produce to students. Though students could previously purchase Greens to Grounds produce, they can now use a portion of their meal plans to do so, thecavalier.com reports.

Students can choose between a snack box or produce box, the ingredients in which usually require no cooking, and can place their orders online. The base boxes cost an average of $10 or less and contain a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables along with dairy and bread. They then pick up the boxes at a farm stand near campus.

Allison Arnold, UVA student and director of Greens to Grounds, said in a statement to localfoodhub.com that she looks forward to the partnership and hopes it will encourage more students to participate in the program.

“G2G is beyond excited to be able to bring responsibly sourced food to a wider audience in the UVA community,” she said. “The university is making strides to promote sustainable food systems and we are a link in the growing web dedicated to this effort.”
