University to build 'food forest'

SPOKANE, Wash. — Students and staff at Whitworth University have spent the last year and a half working on an acre of land that has been untouched for decades.

They are going to build a food forest for everyone on campus. They will plant dozens of fruit trees, vegetables, so people can pick them whenever they want.

Fred Johnston work in facility services. He and his coworker, Aaron Sommerville knew when they learned about the space, that they should put it to use.

"We want this to be sustainable," Johnston said.

"So instead of shipping waste products off, or having a company take the chips elsewhere. They can bring it to us and we can reuse them," he said.
