University adds new rice varieties after students complain

In response to student requests, the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., has introduced two new rice options at its dining halls, student newspaper The Daily Campus reports.

The foodservice team was notified of student complaints when a foreign exchange student from Japan surveyed students to assess the quality of UConn’s rice options. The survey revealed that many students were unsatisfied with the rice currently offered.

After being contacted by the student’s professor, Culinary Manager Rob Landolphi invited students to sample different rice options. The top two selections, Chinese sticky rice and Japanese sushi rice, were introduced to all of the campus dining halls.

Landolphi says that the new rice is a hit with students.

“They’re going through it fast,” he told The Daily Campus. “We’re starting to see movement on it, which tells us that it was a good decision on our part, and we’re glad the students brought it to our attention.”
