UCLA’s leftover food program suspended

The University of California at Los Angeles’ new leftover food program aimed at helping financially insecure students has been postponed indefinitely for not meeting food safety regulations, The Daily Bruin reports.

School officials suspended the program, Bruin Dine, because it does not follow state policy. Bruin Dine had been serving leftover buffet food from one of the school’s dining halls, and California’s Good Samaritan Food Donation Act requires that all donated food be unopened.

Those involved with the program, which launched earlier this month, are working to find ways to restore it. Currently, dining services is donating prepackaged, unopened food from its Bruin Cafe and The Study at Hedrick dining concepts to a local nonprofit, which then donates the food to students who are struggling financially.
