Tufts dining workers want to unionize

A group of dining workers at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., have decided to unionize, the Boston Herald reports.

The workers are planning on joining Unite Here Local 26, the same union that represents dining staff at Harvard University.

Tufts union organizing director Michael Kramer says that up to 200 Tufts employees signed union cards in favor of joining and are asking the school to recognize them without having to go through a National Labor Relations Board process. According to Kramer, the workers haven’t yet finalized what their demands are.

A university spokesman said that the university accepts the employees’ right to pursue an election through the National Labor Relations Board.

More than 500 Tufts students rallied in support of the workers outside administrative offices on Tuesday, while 43 student groups have joined a coalition in favor of the union.
