Normal cafeteria operations of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second largest, were disrupted this morning by a shutdown of the schools because of terrorism fears.
School-board authorities, citing a credible threat of a terrorist attack, ordered all 1,124 schools to close and for workers, faculty and students to stay away until further notice.
The closing affects 700,000 students.
Officials in New York City, host of the nation’s largest school district, said they had received the same warning but did not deem it to be credible. Mayor Bill De Blasio said he know of other school districts that had received the same threat.
Media in the L.A. area quoted unnamed FBI and local police officials as saying the threat involved multiple schools and had been delivered “electronically.”
