Student group petitions university to end Aramark contract

A new student organization, the Fight For Just Food, is petitioning the University of Chicago to end its contract with Aramark, the campus’ foodservice provider.

The organization cites the vendor’s contracts with U.S. prisons as the reason it should sever ties and self-operate instead, reports the university’s student newspaper, The Chicago Maroon.

“Not only do they provide food to prisons, which perpetuates the prison-industrial complex, but they also have a lot of really terrible practices—like they serve rotten food, there are maggots in the food, there’s food that’s been thrown away,” organization member Natalie Naculich told the newspaper.

According to the UChicago Dining website, the university will announce whether or not it will renew its contract with Aramark early this semester.
