School district teams up with hospital to build greenhouse

Marion County Public Schools in Ocala, Fla., has partnered with a local hospital district to create a greenhouse that will supply produce to one of its high schools, Ocala.com reports.

The greenhouse is being developed via a farm-to-school initiative and is a part of Marion County Hospital District’s Fitness and Nutrition in Schools project. The hospital district contributed $200,000 to the greenhouse, while the school district provided around $75,000.

Due to be completed by December, the greenhouse will be located at Vanguard High School, the school that will serve its produce. Officials hope to deliver produce to additional schools as more is grown.

In the future, the districts are looking to partner on similar gardens or greenhouses at six other high schools, as well as educational programs for middle schools.
