School district serves breakfast in class to reduce free-meal stigma

This is the first time all seven Suwannee County schools are eligible for free breakfasts and lunches. The district plans to serve breakfast in the classroom to make sure every student gets that first meal of the day.

Federal funded school meals are expected to go a long way for Suwannee County Schools. Just ask Lisa Dorris, the food service director for the district.

"When they come to school or they start their day with full tummies, they're alert, they're ready to learn, their memory's better," Dorris says.

She says 78% of the district's 6,200 students rely on schools for lunch. Only 40% make it to breakfast, because they're either late for school or don't want to leave their friends.

"The stigma attached that if the kids are eating breakfast, they are the poor kids. They're the kids that are eating free and they just don't want to go," Dorris says.

She hopes serving breakfast inside the class will solve the issue and boost the breakfast percentage to 84%. Grades 1-5 will have breakfast bags distributed in the classroom. Grades 6 and up will have a grab and go system.
