BLUEFIELD, W. Va. — A county school official said corrective measures were needed Monday after Bluefield Middle School students were greeted by an unappetizing color when they opened packages of breakfast biscuits.
Parents of Bluefield Middle School students contacted the Mercer County Board of Education Monday after biscuits that appeared moldy were served with breakfast.
One mother of a Bluefield Middle student, who asked her name not be used, said while her children ate lunches she packed for them, she was still concerned. The biscuits were described as moldy, she stated, providing photos to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
“I’m concerned because a lot of these kids don’t get a hot meal at home,” she stated.
Krista Kessinger, director of child nutrition for Mercer County Schools, said she went to the school and personally took biscuit samples to the Mercer County Health Department.
The biscuits’ color was the result of a chemical reaction in their foil wrappers, Kessinger said. The biscuits, served in the classrooms while still in their foil packets, were opened by the students.
