High-poverty schools in New Jersey will now have to provide breakfast during the school day, AHHerald reports.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill into law last week that requires schools to serve breakfast during the school day if 70% or more of its student population is eligible for free or reduced-priced meals. According to the nonprofit Advocates for Children of New Jersey, approximately 500 schools will be affected.
Officials hope the new law will increase breakfast participation and believe that it will add an additional $42.8 million in federal funds to state schools.
