New cafeteria allows for regular lunch hours

Maryville's new school superintendent has inherited some major construction projects.

After more than a year of delay, construction recently began on a new performing arts center at Maryville High School, and a new cafeteria/commons area at Eugene Fields Elementary School. Voters in the Maryville R-2 School District approved a $10.25 million bond issue for both projects in April, 2014. Maryville School Superintendent Becky Albrecht gave an update on both projects in an interview during KMA's 7:35 news segment Monday morning.

"That is a huge priority for the school district," said Albrecht, "to get that moving along at a quicker pace. I know the community has been waiting for something to happen there for some time. And it has started--work is going on at both sites."

Albrecht's tenure began July 1st. She succeeded Larry Linthacum, who is now superintendent in the Jefferson City School District. Albrecht says preliminary work is underway at both construction sites.

"It looks like the site work at the high school is finished," she said, "and the back end of the building has been demolished. The next move is to pour concrete footings--things of that nature. Over at the elementary school, they're about to catch up at the high school. They've done a lot of utility work, some basic groundwork, and we'll look to be pouring some concrete there in the near future."
