New $40M central kitchen to prep fresh meals for district

Oakland Unified School District is building a $40 million central kitchen to provide healthy meals for its schools, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

District officials say they want to “revamp how food is served” in Oakland schools with the new kitchen. They are shifting to preparing the meals locally and serving them family-style as opposed to being made pre-packaged and frozen off-site.

The kitchen will be located at the former Marcus Foster Middle School and will also have a demonstration farm on-site and classrooms to teach students about culinary arts and hospitality.
