Ill. hospital aims to make patients, staff ‘salt savvy’

In an effort to educate patients and staff about the risks of a high-sodium diet, Alton Memorial Hospital is developing new ways to encourage healthier eating in the cafeteria.

Officials at the Alton, Ill., hospital say promoting resources for organic and locally grown food is also part of their initiative, for which they are using a $10,000 grant they recently received from the Illinois Department of Public Health. 

“We’ll [also] provide educational materials for staff and visitors to become ‘salt savvy’ by flavoring foods using herbs, spices and salt substitutes,” Marlene Lewis, manager of the hospital’s development office, told the website.
