In an effort to ensure students get proper nutrition after school, Richmond County Schools will pilot a free after-school meal program in the fall, nbc26tv.com has learned.
The program rolled out this year as a snack program at one high school in the Georgia district, but starting in the fall, six schools will offer dinner. The after-school meals may include dishes like baked chicken, steamed broccoli, fruit, whole-wheat rolls and fat-free or low-fat milk.
Officials say more schools could potentially be added in the future.
“We [don’t] know what they’re going home and eating after school, so this is providing them a very healthy, nutritious meal,” Patricia Jenkins, the district’s nutrition education specialist, told the website.
