District leans on food trucks at lunch

Bastrop Independent School District in Bastrop, Texas, has added food trucks as a lunch option after receiving feedback from students who wanted to improve school meals and get their peers excited about lunch, KXAN reports.

Before the trucks were introduced, students were able to sample options from different foodservice providers and decide which vendor they liked best.

The meals served, which are prepped in a kitchen but cooked on the trucks, can be reimbursed just like those provided in the cafeteria. The district also says that the food trucks have helped alleviate long cafeteria lines.

Currently, the trucks circulate between several high schools and middle schools in the district. Two other local school districts are looking to replicate the program.
