District feels heat after ‘segregating’ students in cafeteria lines

MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. — Madison County's superintendent is saying an incident last week was honest mistake that led to some students feeling singled and out and embarrassed.

Last Thursday, Dr. Wilcox says the high school cafeteria manager accidentally created a separate line for kids on free or reduced lunch.

Wilcox said the goal was to save money. Instead of offering two entrees, last Thursday the cafeteria manager only offered one. She still used a second line to sell extras, but some kids on free or reduced lunch were not allowed in that line. Wilcox says the manager sold extra items in the second line.

Wilcox apologizes to the students for what happened.
