College runs alcohol pilot program at baseball games

EDINBURG, Texas — The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday that it will run an alcohol pilot program, including the sale of beer and wine at four upcoming baseball home games, over the next two weeks.

During the baseball home games on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. over the next two weeks, UTPA’s current licensed concessionaire, Sodexo Campus Dining Services (Sodexo Sports and Leisure), will administer the sale of beer and wine to ticketed patrons of the general public.

Alcohol sales will begin one hour prior to game time and conclude at the beginning of the seventh inning. Credit cards and cash will be accepted.

Sodexo requires a valid state-issued ID of any patron who appears to be under the age of 30. Sodexo will provide a trained staff member to check IDs upon entrance and provide designated wristbands for patrons who are over 21. Wristbands must be put on at the check-in table.

UTPA Athletics will provide customized wristbands for each pilot program game. Current student-athletes are prohibited from drinking alcohol at UT System athletic venues, regardless of age.
