Calif. school district lunches get ‘California-fied’

Gilroy Unified School District is serving up plenty of new dishes this school year with a focus on locally grown and sourced ingredients, and from-scratch cooking, reports the Gilroy Dispatch.

The new menu items include hand-rolled burritos, black bean and California rice salad shakers, and Sriracha cheese wraps. These items were developed in response to changing palates, as students began requesting more ethnic and vegetarian options, according to officials.

Texas-based Brown Independent School District also recently spiced up their lunch menu by adding a chef salad, tacos el pastor and a chicken teriyaki rice bowl to be served on “Meaty Mondays,” “Taco Tuesdays” and “Asian Fridays,” as reported by FoodService Director.
