Sacramento City Unified School District is working to open a central kitchen, which officials say will improve the quality of the district’s food, The Sacramento Bee has learned.
The $40 million kitchen has been in the works for several years, but recently efforts have been taken to move the process along, according to The Bee.
“I think there have been disagreements on location,” SCUSD trustee Jessie Ryan told the website. “From my perspective, we can’t lose sight of the fact that the central kitchen needs to be built because it is the will of our voters.”
Officials say with many sites operating smaller kitchens, they have had to rely too much on prepackaged foods, and hope that the kitchen will lead to more scratch-cooked meals and the opportunity to source produce from local farmers.
