Austin ISD changes up menu due to boil water notice

Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas, has changed its menu and taken extra precautions due to a citywide boil water notice that went into effect Monday after the city's water supply became contaiminated with high levels of silt due to heavy rain and flooding.

Staff made several changes to the menu, including removing salad bar service and providing baby carrots, precut celery, hot vegetables, canned fruit and fresh fruit with peels such as oranges.

Water used for washing produce, cooking, washing hands and making ice has been “brought to a vigorous boil before use” according to the district’s website. Water fountains have also been covered up to prevent students and teachers from using them.

The district is providing bottled water to students in need and is also accepting sealed, bottled water donations.
