Athletic nutrition center closer to becoming a reality

Louisiana State University is set to break ground on the Tiger Athletic Nutrition Center as early as Spring 2016, reports LSUsports.net.

Construction had been stalled since last spring, when the state of Louisiana proposed significant budget cuts for higher education. The university was in the clear to start construction again after LSU’s athletics department donated $10 million.

Tiger Athletic Foundation president Rick Perry told LSU sports that the nutrition center is not a luxury for student-athletes, but a necessity.

“If you want to have the student-athletes competing at the highest level, then the nutritional aspect is a very big part of it. If they are not eating right, it is very hard for them to compete at the highest level,” Perry said.

College athletic departments are spending big money on food for their student-athletes, as spending has increased 145 percent, according to a recent survey by the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association.
