Ariz. university to open retirement community on campus

Arizona State University has announced plans to build a retirement community on its Tempe campus to meet the growing demand of retirees in the state.

Working in partnership with the Arizona State University Foundation and Pacific Retirement Services, the plan calls for a 20-story building with 291 independent, assisted skilled-nursing and memory-care units, according to a press release. The community also will feature amenities including dining, concierge services, fitness and on-site physicians.

There are nearly 100 similar university-based communities in the United States, including those at Penn State University and Duke University.

“Plans are still coming together to determine many of the details that will be part of the new life plan community,” Elizabeth Giudicessi, associate director of media relations and stratigic commnications at ASU, told FSD via email. “Though it intends to offer extensive amenities—including formal and bistro-style dining—the developers are still in the early phases of defining the exact food services offerings.”

Per the plan’s approval, construction would begin in 2018, with an opening expected in the spring of 2020.
