2-1-1 helps children find free meals

The non-profit organization 211 Palm Beach/Treasure Coast is helping local students find meals during the summer break when they may not have access to free food at school.

Families can get help finding local meal sites this summer by calling 2-1-1 or visiting SummerFoodFlorida.org.

Last year, roughly 70,000 Palm Beach County students received free school lunches. Many local children depend on school breakfast and lunch as their only meals for the day, according to the helpline.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Florida Department of Agriculture, and many other organizations throughout the state have teamed up to create and promote local meal sites during school break, 211 officials said.

“I would really like to see families reach out to 211 for SummerBreak Spot meal site information- as it is important to address the family’s basic need for food and other crucial services from programs that the adults may not know exist,” said Patrice Schroeder, the public information officer for the 211 helpline.

In Martin County, the school district will provide free meals to children during the months of June, July and August.

Meals will be served at several school locations for any child under the age of 18. There are no income requirements or registration.
