New eatery at The Ohio State University does 1 thing very well

During the FSD Chefs’ Summit at The Ohio State University (OSU) in October, chefs from around the country were treated to tours and tastings at several new dining concepts. One in particular stood out for its simplicity, in both the menu as well as technology.

The Mirror Lake Eatery, a new dining concept in the university’s Pomerene Hall, specializes in chicken tenders. Meal combos come with three housemade chicken tenders, french fries and a glazed sweet roll.

The new dining facility is also one of the university’s first that’s cashierless, using only self-service kiosks and online ordering via Tapingo.

The concept’s fried chicken-breast tenders are available in three flavors: original, Buffalo and Sriracha. The concept also serves a variety of milkshakes, including vanilla, chocolate and an LTO flavor.

Students took part in focus groups over the course of a year to help the OSU foodservice team determine the best offering for the revamp that would become the Mirror Lake Eatery. The previous location, Mirror Lake Creamery, served french fries that were very popular with the student body.

The Mirror Lake Eatery also offers 10 dipping sauces, including a signature Mirror Lake Sauce.

Students order their meals via ordering kiosks or on the mobile app Tapingo for pickup. Digital menu boards let students know how long they’ll have to wait for their order, as well as the wait times at other popular campus eateries. Zia Ahmed, senior director of dining services at the university, estimates the university completes 8,000 mobile transactions per day across all campus eateries.

Anchorage School District in Anchorage, Alaska, is offering free meals to students this week while schools are closed due to the recent earthquake, KTVA reports.
