Roanoke City Public Schools in Roanoke, Va., offered free lunch to students during a snow day this week, WSET reports.

The district said it served 179 meals on Tuesday, an increase from when it offered free lunch during a snow day two years ago.

"It's certainly heart-wrenching to know that some of our kids may have been home and not had food,” Ellen Craddock, director of food nutrition for the district, told WSET. “It really is reassuring for our department who serves these kids to know they can come and get a nutritious meal."

Around 10,000 children attending Roanoke City Public Schools are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
