Campus Tour: University of Missouri, Columbia

FSD heads to Columbia to check out a variety of retail concepts and a renovation.

Great changes, such as renovated dining halls and new restaurant-quality retail, have been made at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, which made FSD eager to see these changes for itself. Julaine Kiehn, director of Campus Dining Services, was kind enough to show us the best of Mizzou's new endeavors.

Baja Grill is a very popular Cuban/Southwestern concept that serves all made-from-scratch items, such as pulled beef, pork and chicken tacos, quesadillas and burritos. 

Sabai is one of the newest residential dining locations on campus. The concept features many Southeast Asian favorites, including rice bowls, lettuce wraps, Thai chicken curry and pork spring rolls.

Bahn mi sandwiches continue their industry ubiquity at Mizzou with this chicken version, which also features a wasabi ranch dressing.

This Firecracker Pork Bowl features spicy braised pork shoulder with crisy sweet potatoes and green onions. At the Wheatstone Bistro, customers can get specialty sandwiches, salads, soups, artisan breads and desserts.
A renovation and an addition to the campus’ student center greatly increased the retail offerings at the location. For more on the retail at the student center, click here.View of the seating area at Mizzou's student center.Infusion is the center's coffee concept, which serves freshly roasted coffee, smoothies, doughnuts, breads and ice cream.Kate and Emma’s offers signature sandwiches and wraps with several different flavor profiles. Signature sandwiches include the Turkey Twist, which is made with sliced turkey, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and cranberry sauce, served on thick wheatberry bread, and a Huli Chicken Hoagie made with Huli-marinated chicken, chipotle pico de gallo and avocado sauce.Do Mundo’s menu focus is international barbecue, featuring a churrasco grill. Mort's is named after Mort Walker, the creator of Beetle Bailey and an MU grad. The American grill concept draws design inspiration from its namesake. Mort’s menu offers classic hamburgers, cheeseburgers, turkey burgers, black bean burgers, chicken strips, cheese fries, onion rings and milkshakes. 

Pomodoro offers the student center a classic Italian concept and features a choice of penne or Caprese (pasta stuffed with mozzarella); marinara, Alfredo or a sauce of the week; and a choice of adding chicken and/or vegetables. Pizzas include cheese or pepperoni, along with specials like a Buffalo chicken pizza or a smoked turkey pizza.Innovative artwork adorns several of the student center's concepts.J Café features sandwiches, salads and pastries in the journalism school.Catalyst Cafe offers coffee, sandwiches, salads and pastries.

Plaza 900, completed in 2004,  offers all-you-care-to-eat dining and a grab-and-go location. Because of the popularity of the location, there are currently plans to expand the space in the next two years.

Harvest Table offers muffins, breads, PB&J, granola and similar items. Behind it is Kitchen Corner, which offers self-serve cereal, ice cream, make-your-own waffles, etc. On Stage is Plaza 900's signature concept. The station is where dining staff members prepare a variety of dishes, such as pasta and stir-fry, made to order.

The location features lots of natural light and variety of seating options.

The grab-and-go location, Emporium, offers students convenience items, as well as a gluten-free product line.

The location features Missouri grown or produced products each week, which on this week, focused on local cheeses.
