WHO's kidding whom?

The World Health Organization, product of the dysfunction United Nations, announced last week that its members will discuss ways to reduce the amount of junk food marketing aimed at children around the world. The discussion is scheduled to take place during the U.N. General Assembly meeting this coming September.

Menu Makeover

A community partnership has helped 8,500-student Peninsula School District redevelop menus to be healthier.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has proposed an interesting idea. The group, an outshoot of the activist group PETA, wants the U.S. Department of Agriculture to promote the PCRM’s version of MyPryamid, which it calls The Power Plate.

I read an interesting article over the weekend. Printed in The Financial, it was a recap of a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey that covered a variety of topics having to do with the Obama Administration. Included were questions regarding the recent passage of what is now known as the Healthy, Hungry Free Kids Act.

First of all, I just want to state how happy I am that Congress finally stepped up and made an effort toward giving school foodservice operators the money they need to make school meals healthier. The $4.5 billion pledged over 10 years may not solve all of the problems operators face, but it certainly is a start.

It’s not often that school foodservice programs get positive coverage on television. Even less frequently does such coverage include a food manufacturer. But on a program called "The Balancing Act," which appears on Lifetime Television, Hillsborough County Schools in Florida and The Schwan Food Co. have been given the opportunity to air their views about school nutrition.

I read a couple of interesting foodservice-related articles over the weekend. One was titled, “Are healthy school lunches driving your kids to junk?,” and the other was “Hospitals serving children’s meals packed with saturated fat.”

I always enjoy getting out of the office to visit foodservice operations. I’m not afforded that luxury very often these days; my travel usually finds me attending conferences and seminars, either as a speaker or an observer.
